Back in Black

It’s the song I keep humming every morning on the bus. The new site is white of course, but you get the idea. It’s been a long time. I stopped writing these when things got crazy during Headshots, and never quite managed to get back to them. Between Vidcon, getting my wisdom teeth out, starting a Youtube channel…I won’t say there hasn’t been time to write, but I took it pretty easy over the summer. But I’m back in the saddle and I’m here to stay, every Sunday until whenever. Partly because after spending a few weeks curled up in a tiny ball from pain, I’m out of the habit of leaving my house. Writing here changed that before, and I’m hoping it does again. I also like having a space where I can just write about things that are going on. Speaking of that, I declared a moratorium on crazy schemes for the summer, but now that it’s fall, things are back on.

Kalamazoo 2013

I’ve been slipping on these Sunday posts as Headshots from the Heart gets closer and closer (there won’t be one next week because I’ll be raising money for children’s hospitals). Shoot for the Head…

Headshots is getting closer and closer, so I'm winding up for that, plus the International Congress on Medieval Studies. Oh, and my 30th birthday is next week. Yeah, it's gonna be a fun month. This isn’t about hypocrisy so much as teaching. Most Saturdays I tutor a student in English, and we go over rules, structures, and ideas that are essential to writing. Understanding something well enough to teach it is a lot different from understanding it well enough to use it, and poses a unique challenge. I keep asking myself if I’m abiding by the principles I’m teaching. Whether in writing, in ethics, in gaming, or in communication. And the answer is usually “Sometimes.”

TEDx, VEDA, and Other Acronyms

It’s been a little while since I wrote a Sunday post. I started these posts to keep myself sane in grad school, to make sure that I went out and did something interesting in my community every week rather than locking myself in my office with my thesis, but somehow lately I’ve been too busy getting out in my community to stay inside and write. There’s been work, and TEDx, and Headshots from the Heart, and lots of writing. Just not here, which is a shame. I really enjoy these lazy Sunday posts where I don’t make a case or an argument, just sort of relax in text.
