It’s been getting pretty heavy here lately. November’s like that. I have one story left, but I want to lighten the mood a bit. Before I got my job doing communications for the Faculty Association, I did a lot of babysitting,. I got to look after some really great kids, learned a lot, and had a good time doing it. We watched movies, went to the park, and we started a band. This is the saga of the Windows XP Ninja Turtles.
I spent much of my days with a three year old who, to protect the innocent, I will refer to only as Big G. That’s big as in capital, not as in large. He’s a tiny kid, and he loves cars, and music, and big trucks, like most kids. He’d play my keyboard all the time, and sing along to it. One day he was singing in my room, and I had an idea. “Big G,” I asked, “Would you like to start a band with me?” After some thought, he agreed, and we laid down our first track.
He was always the brains of the operation, writing all the lyrics as well as being lead singer. He named the band too, I can never think of anything good. We were a rock band with a focus on things that are awesome, like cars.
We even did a few songs for the kids. He was really trying to reach out to his own demographic. I mean, it was all about the music for him, never the fame or the money, so he really wanted to do something that kids his own age would be into.
Once he got flowing, he started to get psychedelic, shifting his focus to the objects of his imagination, which had run wild, caught in the high of the music.
It was a hell of an afternoon. He eventually moved on, and I hear he’s working on a solo career now, but I’ll never forget my time working with Big G. We put the band back together one afternoon and re-recorded one of our earlier numbers, with a solo on his new recorder.
As with any young star, we had to get his parents permission to release his music into the world, but now that we have it, it’s here for you to enjoy. While the Windows XP Ninja Turtles may be done with, I don’t think you’ve heard the last of Big G.
Have a good week.
