Hope Springs Eternal

I did a lot of things this week. I applied for jobs, played D&D, gave a guitar lesson, and went to my first open night at Kwartzlab. I went to the symphony, learned some great new songs at band practice, helped a friend move a cabinet, and learned how to win with Eldar. Earlier today, I was going to write about all of that. Well, some of that. But I thought I’d wait until after I got back from Hopespring Cancer Support Centre’s grand opening to write this, just in case. I was right to do it. The people I met there and the stories they shared with me really hit home and reminded my why I love doing work with them.  (more…)

Grad Level Gratitude

When I think about finishing, my first thought is always “I didn’t do it by myself.” Oh, I did all the writing and reading, but there’s more to it than that. The Grand Porch Party last Sunday, playing bass with the Berliners, and then again for three sets at Souls for Milestones, and finally today at Open Streets in Uptown Waterloo. It’s also been a week full of learning and inspiration, both from friends and members of the community at Ignite Waterloo on Tuesday, and at a Hopespring professional development seminar yesterday. But I keep coming back to music.  (more…)

Headshots 2012

Today is the first day after Headshots from the Heart, and in some ways, the first day of the rest of my life. As I write this, despite the choking heat in my room and the weekend’s sleepless night, I’m filled with a strange energy. We did it. Months of planning culminated into one mad weekend, and then it was over. With a total of 3508 headshots (over 1200 of which were mine) over 24 hours of continuous play, we raised more than two thousand dollars for Child’s Play. We couldn’t have done it without our volunteers, the businesses, local and online who supported us, Kwartzlab, and our viewers. Did I mention that the whole stream is recorded online? (more…)
