Habit

Above all else, I’m a creature of habit. I think we all are to some extent. We enjoy a good routine. Getting my wisdom teeth out put me out for two weeks and shook up that routine quite a bit. I’ve decided to get a new one. Getting up earlier, doing more things, exercising better and finding more time to do the things I really like, like cook, make music, and shoot videos. here are some of the habits I’m trying to get into.

Get up earlier

My night out this week took me to the Ignite Waterloo speakers’ workshop, where I got to talk with some great people from the community and generally hang out. While I was there, I found out that my friend Greg from Spike|Mobile wakes up at 4:30 in the morning. It seemed utterly mad to me, but I know Greg and he’s a relatively sane person. So I gave it a try, and it seems to be working out alright. I’ve only been at it for two days, but I haven’t noticed my faculties diminishing. I tend to take a short nap around midday, but an extra 90 minutes in the morning has me writing and exercising before breakfast no matter what kind of excuses I make.

De-clutter

I know a lot of people use this to mean getting rid of stuff, but it seems like an apt term for what I really want to do. I tend to get absorbed in things. Whether it’s writing, games, research, work, music, whatever. When I do, other things start to slip. If I spend twelve hours reading, I don’t make time to eat food, let alone clear off my desk. As a result, my space starts to accumulate strata of paperwork, musical instruments, computer parts,  and the flotsam and jetsam of my life. I’m trying to, once a day, stop and clear everything up. I have an alarm for it and everything.

The usual

Write more, write better, more music, more videos. I have a lot of things I want to make, but I want to take the time to do them right. Perfect is the enemy of done, but I don’t like how done and mediocre have been cozying up to each other. I’m planning a scheme worthy of a John Hughes movies to break them up.

It’s small stuff, but the devil’s in the details. I’ll let you know how it goes.
