Today's video came out of a post a friend of mine put up on Facebook that got a billion likes from everyone, but also got me thinking about how saying we need to forget about race and sexuality and focus on humanity is a super problematic thing to do, and steeped in privilege. He's a good guy, and I know his heart's in the right place, but that doesn't always count for as much as we'd hope. Mistakes get made, and I'm no stranger to that. Colourblind ideology is problematic for a lot of reasons that I get into today. Let me know what you think in the comments, especially if I trip up and pile problems on problems.

So I'm in the Polar Plunge on Feb. 22, and for a donation of $20, I offered to do a song or a monologue out in the cold. All the proceeds go to helping kids with special needs, and it's a good time. Today was my first video of it, and it was a lot of fun, though my guitar is cranky. I love writing songs for people, and this was from a friend for a different friend, because it's her birthday today. Things I learned? You don't always get the song you want, you get the song you need (and sometimes you just get the song you get).

I started with a bunch of facts about Kourtney, thinking that I'd compile her virtues and attributes into some kind of tune. But the part that struck me was something Kristy, the donor in question (and my teammate for the Plunge), said to me about the day they met. She'd been thinking about making a change to cover up something she regretted, and Kourtney told her to never be embarrassed about who she was. On the first day they met. Some people are just like that, and that's what stuck with me.

I've remarked before that I'm lucky enough to run into people who and know immediately that if I do right by them, they'll be my friend forever, and be a friend worth having. When it came down to it, that was what the song was about, not that she's great, but the nature of their relationship and how it reflects on others. It's about what true friends do, which I hadn't expected from a silly birthday jingle. Anyway, I am rambling. Video!
